I have seen many blogs which get a numerous visits but the outcome is less. If you see their average time length of a visitor, it would be much less than 1 minute. You have to keep your visitor in your blog for a longer time. If you could see the problogger blog, you will find that the visitors stay for a long time. To make sure that your blog visitors stay with your blog, follow few simple points I list out:
1. Link to other articles of your blog in between the post. This will make the visitors to read that article.
2. Have a "related articles" column at the end of each post. Many readers will take their time to read those articles.
3. Have a poll in your blog which is related to your niche. Make sure that this refresh every time a visitor re-loads the page. Or have a poll like the one which Daniel has in his blog Daily Blog Tips.
4. Have "featured posts" or "Top posts" column in your blog and make sure that it can be seen by the visitors.
5. Always ask for a feedback of any post from your blog readers. Do reply to their comments and this will lead to a great number of comments and the blog reader will not only stay for long time but will also return for a new post. Though I don't get much comments on my blog, I reply for each and every comment. One such blogger I have seen who replies to each and every comment on her blog is Liz Strauss.
6. Hold contests in your blog like the John Chow's Evil Blog Contest.
7. This point is a general point which everyone would know. Keep a top commentors option in your blog. This will ensure that your blog reader will also comment in your blog.
Following these points will get you a good number of RSS Readers also.

That was a great post! I've a very high bounce rate... With your tips coming handy, I can really improvise on reducing that.
Very good post :)
Thanks for your comment Shankar. Glad that you liked my post. You can actually try these as you have wordpress. Unfortunately I cannot as I have my blog in blogspot.
Hi Ram,
This is a nice post, but as for having a top commentators widget there are several bad sides. One of them is that in every page, for every post, you are linking to someone else and thus sort of diluting your links.
My best approach for this was to actually remove the nofollow for comments. That way you are still rewarding your commentators without any side-effects.
Toze,
Yeah that is also good idea. But if you see, many of the top bloggers have a widget called top commenters. There are instances where some people comment just to come to the top of the list. This sometimes leads to spamming. Thanks for your comment.
